Speed & Aggressive Driving

a picture of an arizona road through the mountains

In Arizona, 27.69% of all crash fatalities in 2008 were a result of driving too fast for conditions or exceeding the lawful speed.  In total, 357 people were killed due to speeding in Arizona alone. Excessive speed increases the likelihood of crashing and the risk of severe injury in a crash. In 2006, more than 13,000 lives were lost in speeding-related crashes (NHTSA, 2006a). Reducing speeding is a high-priority objective and effective speed enforcement is an essential countermeasure to reduce speeding and lowering crash risk.

Changing American Attitudes Regarding Speed on the Highways

The U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration  released a report In 2007 that explores automated enforcement systems implemented around the world and characterizes the safety impacts of such deployments.

Red Light Running
In 2007 in the U.S., almost 900 people were killed and an estimated 153,000 were injured in crashes that involved red light running. Public costs exceed $14 billion per year, and more than half of the deaths in red light running crashes are other motorists and pedestrians.
